PMH Ear, Nose, Throat, and Allergy Specialist Dr. Coral Tieu Performing Stapedectomy and Other Hearing Loss Services
May 26, 2021
Prosser Memorial Health is proud to provide services for all your medical needs, including hearing loss. Ear, Nose, Throat, and Allergy specialist Dr. Coral Tieu performs stapedectomy procedures for those suffering from otosclerosis. Otosclerosis is the abnormal formation of bone around the small stapes bone inside the ear, causing a decrease in hearing. This type of hearing loss can be diagnosed using a hearing test performed by an audiologist. If untreated, otosclerosis causes ringing in the ear and progressive hearing loss.
During a stapedectomy surgery, Dr. Tieu will partially or completely remove the stapes bone, which is then replaced by an artificial device that will aid with hearing. The doctor will use general anesthesia, a surgical laser, and an operating microscope to perform this procedure. It can usually be performed with no visible incisions. You expect the surgery to last about 90 minutes. Dr. Tieu is also able to perform bone anchored hearing implants for patients with certain types of hearing loss that cannot be helped by traditional hearing aids. Other surgeries she provides to improve hearing include tympanoplasty to repair a hole in the eardrum and ossicular chain reconstruction to fix damaged hearing bones in the ear, such as the malleus or incus.
Dr. Coral Tieu received her BA at the University of South Florida in Tampa and MD at Rosalind Franklin University, Chicago Medical School; she is a Board-Certified member of the American Academy of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery.
