It is important to recognize when someone may be experiencing signs of distress and thinking about hurting themselves or others. Signs of distress include:

  • Threats to hurt or kill themselves
  • Seeking access to pills or weapons
  • Talk of death or escape
  • References to worthlessness
  • Giving away possessions
  • Talking or writing about death, dying or suicide
  • Major changes in mood and activity
  • Withdrawing from others
